My first 'grad school' assignment at the University of Alberta was to write an essay on an ecologist that 'has inspired you to pursue your chosen field of research" and to frame it around personal communications. I chose to interview Bob Paine and fired him half a dozen dumb-ass questions about marine biology (I had just recently switched over from terrestrial work). That experience - ranks up there with my first ROV cruise and a wild mink killing all my live research animals.
Bob Paine's legacy will always be about his ideas and the people he inspired; definitely a keystone scientist that will be missed.
